Mustangs Lock up Second Aussie Recruit

Auburn, ME - Central Maine Community College Head Men's Basketball Coach Dave Gonyea is pleased to announce Cam Duncan, a native of Bundaberg, Australia and graduate of Kepnock State High School has committed to the Mustangs for the 2016-17 school year.  Coach Gonyea has been recruiting Cam for the past year.

Cam has many accomplishments on his resume.  He has been the captain of his high school team for 3 years and won 4 high school tittles.  He is also the youngest player to play in the QBL.  He was named the all-defensive player in 2015 in the QBL.

According to Cam:

Why did you choose CM?

"When I first began the college process I was unsure of what would be the right fit for me. After receiving multiple emails that were obviously copies, it was a breath of fresh air to have a coach send a short, sharp email about what he saw in my game. That was Coach Gonyea and from then on I had a feeling this was a school for me. Later on I was connected with Pietro a current player and hopefully my future teammate, I knew it was a done deal. Those two along with CM staff made me feel welcome and were extremely helpful from day one. That same welcoming spirit is what made me choose to go to Central Maine to be a Mustang."

How do you think playing college basketball will differ from your previous experience?

"I have currently played in a league in Australia that has a lot of ex-college players. Those guys were some of the best basketball players I have ever come up against. So I assume college basketball will be like versing five of those guys at a time. This will be a great challenge that I think my past experiences have prepared me for."

What are you most looking forward to about attending and playing basketball at CM?

"Obviously I am looking forward to playing basketball in college the most. The thing I am most looking forward to, which may sound crazy, is the training. I am a player who obsesses over preparation and with the facilities I've seen I know that I can be prepared for the season."

What do you think you can bring to the team next year?

"Effort. That is one trait that I pride myself on and know I can bring in any league. That effort has allowed me to be a great defensive player and also has allowed me to develop a shot with range. So from a physical point of view, I can bring mostly shooting and defense to the table. However, from a mental standpoint I hope to be the hardest working Mustang they've seen."

According to Coach Gonyea, "when I first saw Cam play, I knew he would fit in our system.  Confirmation came on a facetime call with Cam and his family. Not only can he shoot it, he gets up and down and plays D.  It will be great to see him and Pietro playing together."

"We are fortunate to have a steady stable of players who want to play at CM.  Our present Aussie, Pietro, has opened our eyes not only with the talent he brings to the table but his work ethic and commitment to the classroom.   Pietro understands the levels of basketball in Australia and helped vetting Cam. We are convinced Cam will bring the same skill set as Pietro on and off the court.  We are thrilled he is joining our family."
