From the Ground Up - Behind the Scenes with Munzing Media

Have you ever wondered who is behind the broadcasting of all Mustang Athletic events? We recently chatted with Rob Munzing of Munzing Media about how he got started and his connection with Central Maine Community College. We are incredibly lucky to have him play a major role in the Mustang family. Stay up-to-date with everything Munzing Media by liking their Facebook page.

Did you grow up in this area?

I'm from Danvers, Mass. After graduation in 1971, I attended the University of Maine where I played football -QB starter in 1973 and baseball pitcher. I graduated with a B/S in Education.

Give us a little background on you and the creation of Munzing Media.

I began my teaching/coaching career at Gardiner HS in 1975. I coached varsity baseball 1979-1989 and varsity football from 1975-2000. My teams won 3 Class A East Championships. I taught for 38 years and developed the Video Production at Gardiner Area HS. We began streaming full time in 2011 and were the first to do so full time in Maine. Munzing Media is a family run operation and everyone in the family has worked games for us at one time or another.

How long have you been working with Central Maine Community College Athletics?

We did our first game for CMCC during the 2016 season with the 2017 season our first complete season of Women's and Men's Basketball. 2021-2022 is our first season of total coverage for CMCC as we will stream close to 100 games during fall, winter and spring athletic seasons.

How have you had to change as technology advances?

We pride ourselves on providing the best streaming service possible and we have upgraded our technology to meet that goal. We were the first to provide replay, mic the coaches for time outs, use Multicam . We modified our equipment to send video to the video board at Kirk Hall. We continue to look at ways to improve our streaming.

What challenges have you faced as a company due to COVID-19?

During covid, demand for our services exploded. We have always covered high school sports as well as our two colleges(CMCC and UMA), but high schools requested our services especially during last year when fans were not allowed in most gyms. We also had a demand to cover end of year activities for many schools. We increased our equipment to be able to produce two concurrent games/ events with the same production values for each event. This was also important to our commitment to CMCC for total coverage as we can cover concurrent baseball/softball games for the college with exact same production values for each game.

What is your favorite part about covering CMCC games?

I love these kids. I'm a coach first and always and I know the commitment that being a student-athlete requires. My three sons all played college football at the D1,D2, D3 level. I love connecting with the families and bringing the games into their homes. So many of these families are far away and can't get to the games. We help with that family connection. Here is a recent comment from one of our Australian families.

What has been your favorite game that you have covered?

A 79-68 Men's game victory over SMCC to clinch the #2 seed in the 2018 season. Elijah Barbour went off from the behind the arc down the stretch to seal the victory before a full house at Kirk Hall.

Any additional comments:

All the folks at CMCC have the same family values that we have at Munzing Media. We are proud that we have established this fantastic relationship and hope to continue along this path for many years
