World Series experience proves mighty for Mustangs

Auburn, ME – With a week passing since the women's softball team returned from the USCAA World Series, coaches and players were able to reflect on their experience.  Head coach Bruce Robertson shared, "It was a good learning experience and we now know we are equal with the teams there. We know where we need to be and what we need to do in order to return."

The Mustangs started off their World Series journey with an opening game thriller against PSU Schyulkill. A defensive gem from both sides saw the game going into the bottom of the seventh inning knotted at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Meghan Stokes knocked in the game winning run for PSU and they advanced in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Avery Herrick pitched for the Mustangs and struck out seven batters, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. Herrick, Emily Wormwood, Abby Ferland, and Maria Dostie each collected a hit for the Mustangs offensively.

With the loss, the Mustangs faced #9 PSU Hazleton next in a must win game to keep their tournament hopes alive! Despite going ahead 2-0 after three innings, PSU rallied off 12 unanswered runs to defeat CM 2-12. The Mustangs struggled getting their bats going, being out hit 14-6. Errors proved detrimental for CM as out of the 12 runs scored, only four were earned.  Olivia Gallan led the team going 2-2 on the day. Haley Fernald and Olivia Scott each collected a hit and an RBI for the Mustangs. Maria Dostie and Emily Sanfacon each went 1-2 with a run scored. Avery Herrick pitched again for CM, going the distance with four strike outs and walking two batters.

The loss against Hazleton, meant the end of the Cinderella run for the Mustangs. Coach Robertson viewed the experience as positive, "Players and coaches all saw and learned a lot while down there." It may have not been the outcome they wanted, but everyone at CM is proud of this team and coaches for the effort and dedication they had this entire season. This was a great stepping stone for the program and only positive things will come from it.
