CM Falls to CCRI in Season Opener

Auburn, ME-  CCRI came out swinging and just 2:05 into the match a free kick bounced through the Mustang defense and fell at the feet of Wilson Bannafield who quickly finished giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.  Both teams saw multiple opportunities, but it was Mustang co-captain Devin Hanlan who scored next. Twenty minutes in Hanlan chased down a bouncing ball provided by another co-captain, Dido Lumu and finished bringing the Mustangs even 1-1.  Unfortunately, that score wouldn't hold as Joe Dorset dribbled the ball around a defender and the CM goalkeeper with just three minutes remaining bringing the score to 2-1.

Eight minutes into the second half a hand ball in the box on CM's Cullen Anderson led to a penalty kick for the knights. Bannafield took the penalty which went off the post and Lumu, a nice rebound came out for the Knights, but Lumu came up with another impressive save. Bannafield would redeem himself and got his second goal of the match twelve minutes later when he finished a 1-on-1 with CM goalkeeper Dido Lumu brining the score to 3-1.  With eleven minutes remaining in the game CCRI's Ramos made a nice pass to Taniko who put the Knights up 4-1.  In the closing minute CM's Hanlan made a nice run with the ball, eventually getting fouled and the Mustang's third captain Abdibaari Hersi stepped up a placed his free kick nicely in the side netting with just 10 seconds remaining. The final score was 4-2.

After the game Coach Bryan Wallace said, "Our guys played pretty well. We're never happy with a loss as a result, but CCRI has a few games under their belt, and we showed we could hang with them. We need to be protective of the ball when we have it and not force plays forward, but all in all the staff and I saw some positive play from our guys."

CM travels to Bangor to face Husson University in an exhibition game on Monday.
