Mustangs Win vs Berkeley

Auburn, ME - Guard, Rosa Prieto was on the same page with Central Maine Community College coach Andrew Morong when she gave her analysis of the Mustangs' performance on Friday night.

The Mustangs (5-0), fueled by Ella Levigne's 31-point performance, ran the floor in the first half and shook off feisty Berkeley College with an 81-65 victory in a women's basketball game to remain undefeated at 5-0.

"I think we are off to a good start," Prieto, who scored six points and had four assists, said. "We had a 10-0 run the first quarter. It was like in the first four minutes. It was enjoyable to see all the spurts we had. We were just scoring, we were getting steals and layup after layup. That was very exciting.

"I believe we carried out what we set out to do. I think we let up a little bit the last two quarters."

The Mustangs set the pace of the game and emerged with a 27-12 lead after the first quarter and then held the Knights to a 10 points in the second stanza to build a convincing 45-22 lead.

"I think for the first two and half quarters we played CM basketball," Morong said. "For the last quarter and a half, we got away from that, which is unfortunate. (But) we got contributions up and down, you know, and a lot of things that don't show up on the scoreboard. But I was very happy with the confidence that we played in the first half, especially into the third quarter."

Lavigne turned in another stellar effort on offense, but she had nine rebounds and eight steals to also give the Mustangs a boost on defense.

"...She was just short of another triple double, but when you shoot as good as she does, she is very efficient from the floor, there are less opportunities for offensive rebounds," Morong said. "She got it done. She set the tone, but I think as a team, we really set the tone in the first three minutes of the game.

"We dedicated how the game was going to be played and they caved to it instantly and that just kind of fueled our fire."

Destiny Mora Lopez was also strong on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds and scoring six points. Chantel Ouellette went five-for-six at the free-throw line, scored nine points and had five steals. Molly Corbett scored eight points.

Keisy Villanueva and Khya Hough lead the Knights with 20 and 18 points, respectively.
