Mustangs make statement in win over CCRI

Auburn, ME - CM put on one of their best efforts of the year on Saturday, in a 83-45 blowout over NJCAA nationally ranked, CCRI. The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but a 15-2 CM run in response set the stage for the rest of the game.

The Mustangs dominated the paint, out-rebounding the Knights by +33 and out-scoring them 54-14. The relentess, physical attack in the paint overwhelmed the Knights who only lost to the Mustangs by 9 back in early-December. Ella Lavigne dominated with her third straight double-double. She tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds. Rosa Prieto shined once again as well. Prieto finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Riley Hebler was the third Mustang in double figures, finishing with 13 points and some relentless defense. Destiny Mora Lopez narrowly missed a double-double of her own, finishing with 9 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mustangs bench, led by Hebler and Winnie LaRochelle (9 points) out-scored the Knights bench 29-4.

Chantel Ouellette took another charge, bringing her season total to 15. Ouellette is in hot pursuit of Jenny Schlim's (2016-17) program record of charges in a season (17). Hebler took a charge of her own today, bringing her season total to 10.

Nysia Ortiz led CCRI with 14 points.

After the game, Head Women's Basketball Coach, Andrew Morong, commented, "We really, really got after it today. We thought the game in Rhode Island back in December was closer than it should have been, and we had set the goal to win today's game by thirty. Not only did we accomplish that, but I think this served as a nice wake-up call for our program... if we focus on the little things, and do them extraordinarily well, we are going to be incredibly difficult to beat. We got fifteen rebounds from our two point guards; Rosa had eight and Mikenzie Melendez had seven. When you have guards rebounding like that, stacked with Destiny and Ella both hitting double digit boards, you're going to get easy buckets. To score eighty three points against a tough CCRI team is fantastic, and to do so without pressing and without fouling is even better."

With the win the Mustangs improve to 14-1 overall, and have four straight conference games at home. Next up, NHTI on Tuesday with a 7:00pm tip-off.
