Mustangs Shut Down UNE 10-4

Auburn, ME - The Central Maine Men's Ice Hockey team topped the visiting University of New England Nor'Easters in ACHA action at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn. The Mustangs have now won three consecutive games after dropping their first game to UMaine Orono.

Caleb LeBrie started the scoring at 1:40 of the first period with an assist from line-mate Matt Henderson. At 5:45 UNE's Porier answered with an unassisted goal. The Mustangs then tallied four unanswered goals from Matt Henderson (two), LaBrie, and Joshua Noyes. The Nor'Easter's made it interesting with two goals in the second period from Spry and the crafty Somerhoff. The Mustangs went into the dressing at the end of two periods up 8-3 on additional goals by Jordy Knoren, Cade Chapman (power-play goal), and Matt Henderson's third short-hander.

"I felt we were strong in the offensive end but were tentative in our defensive zone in the first period. Our guys were giving them too much respect in the D-zone and failed to pressure the puck. That allows them to dance around and make plays" said Coach Kevin Cady. Coach Gosselin and I addressed it and we were more aggressive in the second period in our zone."

The Mustangs were impressive in the third getting goals from Evan Sullivan and Sederick Simons. Porier scored his second goal of the game for UNE in the third but that was all they left on the ice.

Evan Sullivan had a goal and three assists, Matt Henderson had a five-point night, and Caleb LaBrie was a solid contributor with four points. Charles Campagna, Kevin Knight, Dylan Farrell-Reny all chipped-in assists. Matthew Poulin had three helpers during the tilt.

"We are still trying to gel as a team.  We have raw skill and talent but need to learn we live and die as one" added Cady. "The team comes first and everyone has role to play. We had a short bench in the first half and rolled the lines in the third. All-in all this was a solid team effort and a satisfying win."

Central Maine out shot UNE 48 to 36.

The Mustangs move to 3 and 1 on the season and will be in action next Friday, November 3rd at 8:30 pm vs Thomas College at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.
