Softball slips past UNE Club

Auburn, ME - In the home opener, Head Coach, Bruce Robertson, turned the ball to first-year Avery Herrick (Dexter, ME) for her second start of the season.

UNE scored first on an error in the first inning and lead until the 5th inning when Haley Fernald (Bridgton, Me) who was on base by being hit by a pitch scored on a passed ball. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 6 inning when Olivia Gallan (SOuth Paris, ME) hit a homerun putting the Mustangs up 2-1. Emily Wormwood (Bowdoinham, ME) then got on base after being hit by a pitch. She was drove in by Avery Herrick's RBI Double putting the Mustangs up 3-1. This is all the Mustangs needed as they hung on for the win.

Coach Robertson commented, "Early on we struggled at the plate, but once again, Avery was solid in the circle with another 10 Strike Outs! She really kept us in the game until we could finally score late in the game. The UNE pitcher really kept us off balance limiting our hits. But we dug deep and pulled out the win with a couple key hits. Gallan was huge for us again this afternoon. She has speed and poer, and is a smart player that is fun to watch."

Herrick pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits, an Unearned run, 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. In relief the Mustangs turned to Becca Ackerson (Whitefield, ME) in the 6th inning. Ackerson in two innings of relief gave up 0 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. Ackerson picked up her first collegiate win as a Mustang.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 3-0 this fall.

The Mustangs next play on Saturday September 25th when they host CCRI for doubleheader action starting at 12/2pm.
