Mustangs swept by CCRI

Lincoln, RI - The CM Softball Team hit the road to face the Knights of CCRI in doubleheader action Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: Knights W, 8-0 (5 innings)

The Mustangs started game one with second-year Olivia Scott (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), who pitched 3 innings allowing  5 hits, 4 strike outs while walking no batters and allowing 4 runs to cross the plate. The Mustangs then turned to Makayla Gross (Farmington, ME) in the fourth. Gross faced 2 batters before taking a line drive back to her injuring her right wrist knocking her out of the game and for the day. Gross gave up 1 hits, no earned run, 0 walks and 1 strikeouts before leaving the game. The Mustangs turned the ball back to Scott who got the Mustangs out of the inning with a strikeout. Unfortunatly the Mustangs committed two errors in the 5th allowing allowing 3 runs to score which ended the game due to mercy rule.

Scott took the loss for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs offense was stagnant in game 1 not collecting a hit to get on base as any ball that hit the bat found its way to a defendrs glove. The Mustangs struck out 5 times.

Olivia Gallon (S. Paris, ME), added a stolen base for the Mustangs.

Game 2: Knights W, 5-4 (8 innings)

In game 2, the Mustangs turned to first-year Avery Herrick (Dexter, ME) to make the start. Herrick pitched all 8 Innings allowing only 5 hits, 7 strike outs while walking 1 batter and allowing 3 earned runs. Herrick was solid in the cirlce right into the 7th inning with the Mustangs leading 3-1 until 3 Mustang errors allowed CCRI to tie the game. The Mustangs went ahead in the 8th with an RBI shot by Erin Gosselin (Monmouth, ME) scoring Haley Fernald (Bridgton, ME) who had reached base two batters before with a fence-hitting double to left field. Going into the bottom of the eighth Herrick did all she could to hang on giving the first 2 batters up each a hit. She then got a ground out and a strike out. With 2 outs, a bloop hit to shallow center field scored the two runners on allowing the Knights to pick up the win.

Game 2 saw the Mustangs come out much more aggressive at the plate against the Knights. The Mustangs added 11 hits, and were paced by Gallan, Scott, and Fernald who each had two hits. Maddy Boynton, Av. Herrick,  Addyson Herrick (Dexter, ME), Gosselin and Emily Sanfacon (Lebenon, ME) each contributed hits for the Mustangs.

Gallan added 4 more steals in game two.

After the game Head Softball Coach, Bruce Robertson, commented, "These were a couple tough losses for us today. Game one we came out flat, we were not ready and CCRI took advantage of that. Game two Avery pitched a great game, she took the ball and carried the team on her back through 8 innings. We gave her all the run support we could. But we had one bad inning in the 7th with 3 errors letting CCRI back in and they grabbed the win. We now know what we need to work on before next weekend when we host CCRI back at CM where we hope the results are much different."
