Auburn, ME – Kristen Huntress, a standout guard from Lake Region High School, becomes the first student-athlete from the class of 2017 to commit the women's basketball program. A 3-point specialist with blazing speed, Huntress has been a major contributor for Lake Region HS and her MBR Basketball club team.
As a junior, Huntress was named to the Western Maine Conference (WMC) 1st Team while averaging 16.4 points per game, and leading the WMC in 3-point field goals. During her freshman campaign with Lake Region, she helped the Lakers win the Class B State Championship. Over the last 2 seasons, Huntress has played for the MBR Basketball club team. In 2015 her team finished 2nd in the 10th grade DIII National Tournament hosted at Disney's Wide World of Sports. This past season, Huntress and the MBR club won the USJN Nike Copper Division National Championship in Washington DC.
In addition to excelling on the court, Huntress is also a member of the National Honor Society and Varsity Club, while also participating in the WMC Student-Athlete Summit in both her freshman and senior years.
Huntress on why she chose CM, "I chose CM because from the second I first stepped on campus, I felt at home. It is located close to my family, making it easier for them to visit me and attend games. In addition, the campus is the perfect size, I'll be able to study accounting, and I will be able to do all of this at an affordable price. My favorite thing about the campus is that CM's classrooms and labs are equipped with the latest technology, and I love the living situation with all of the other basketball players. During my tour, every single staff member I walked by made me feel welcomed."
On basketball, "College basketball will be more competitive and a lot more difficult, but I think playing AAU basketball for Coach Morong over the past two years will help me with the transition. I feel as though my speed and aggressive play will be a good addition to the team. I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead, both academically and athletically."
According to Head Women's Basketball Coach, Andrew Morong, "First and foremost, Kristen is a tremendous young woman with a tremendous family – both aspects being very important to our program. Her defensive prowess and her overall speed make her a nightmare for opposing teams, so unleashing her in our pressure defense should be a joy to watch. People see her are mostly a perimeter shooter, but she can be so much more, and I'm excited to see that continue to develop over the next couple years. Over the last four years she's been lucky enough to play for one of Maine's best coaches, Paul True. Getting a player from a Coach True's program means we are getting a player who has been held to a very high standard, both on and off the court, and has a sense of what it takes to win at a very high level. This is an exciting addition to our program, and one we will be able to build the rest of our 2017 recruiting class around."
