Auburn, ME - Spruce Mountain standout, Alex Bessey, will be attending CM and playing women's basketball this fall. Bessey had a tremendous senior campaign, compiling 430 points to become Spruce Mountain's first 1,000 point scorer. The 2-time KVAC 1st Team All-Star, was also named a Maine McDonald's Senior All-Star and to the Sun Journal All-Region 1st Team. Bessey was also named a USJN National Tournament All-Star for her performance with her MBR club basketball team last summer in Washington DC.
An Honor Roll student, Bessey will study Early Childhood Education at CM.
Head Women's Basketball Coach, Andrew Morong, on Bessey, "Alex is one of the state's best guards, and I have been saying that for a couple of years now. I think she has gone under the radar, and this is a huge pick-up for our program. I have seen her play dozens of times, whether it was against KVAC Class B teams or against Division-1 caliber guards at national AAU events, and I have always been impressed with the way Alex rises to the occasion. She is a versatile scorer, able to attack and finish through contact with either hand, hit from the mid-range, draw fouls, and connect from well beyond the three-point line. With all of her scoring, I think one of her most impressive traits, which may go unnoticed, is her ability and eagerness to take charges. Alex is very crafty on the defensive end, and her willingness to sacrifice her body for her team proves that she is selfless. Her basketball IQ is off the charts, and she can take over games while scoring, or setting her teammates up - she has an understanding of when to score and when to facilitate that really sets her apart from most guards."
According to Spruce Mountain Head Coach, Zach Keene, "Alex is one of the hardest working, committed and most competitive athletes I have been around. She can score, facilitate and defend at a high level. CMCC is an extremely good fit for Alex. Coach Morong has worked to build an extremely successful program and a winning culture that Alex will certainly help sustain moving forward. I am very excited to watch her play at the next level."
Bessey on her commitment, "I chose CM because I enjoyed the smaller campus with great academic programs, but also because of the winning tradition with a coach who I know cares about me as much off the court as he does on the court. I wanted to stay in state, close to friends, and family, and with the small class sizes, I know I will be getting a great education. College basketball is going to be different, everyone will be bigger, faster, stronger, and more experienced. I am willing to compete hard and challenge my teammates every day."
Bessey joins Kristen Huntress (Lake Region), Natalie Thurber (Wells), Jordyn Reynolds (Edward Little), Cagney O'Brien (Lincoln Academy), and Devona Kinsey (SMSA - CT) in the Lady Mustangs 2017 recruiting class.
