Pitching and defense propel Mustangs past Seawolves

South Portland, ME - The cool, calm and collected Levi Tibbetts pitched into the 7th inning giving up just three hits, one run and striking out seven to lead the Mustangs to convincing a 5-1 win over the Seawolves of SMCC on Tuesday afternoon in South Portland. Derek Roman pitched the last couple innings to pick up the save.

The Mustangs got things going in the fifth inning as Wyatt Knightly had a 13 pitch at bat that resulted in a two out RBI double that scored Brandon Gour to tie the game at 1. In the top of the 7th, Teddy McFarland had a one-out single that plated Gour for his second run scored of the game and the Mustangs took the lead for good 2-1.

Colton Frisbie led the top of the 8th off with a single to get things started. A Brogan McCormick fielders choice scored pinch runner Ryan Stone. The next batter Mason Booker had a single to left field that plated pinch runner Kaleb Thompson. Three batters later Hudson Burris had a line drive down the right field line that scored pinch runner Avery MacWhinnie to give the Mustangs the 5-1 advantage.

Roman came in to shut the door striking out four of the last five batters he faced.

Head Baseball Coach, Ryan Palmer, commented, "It seema like we say this often, but pitching and defense are key. Boy oh boy our pitching has come into their own and has been stellar. Our defense cannot go unnoticed either. We are making some big plays to keep us in ball games. Clutch hitting has been our achilles heel this fall, it was nice to see us break out of that and get several clutch hits later in the game."

The Mustangs are back in action this weekend as they make the trek to Presque Isle to take on UMPI in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1:00pm.
