Mustangs Fall On First Stop of Canadian Tour

Saint John, New Brunswick – The CMCC men's basketball team opened its three-game weekend road trip through New Brunswick with a 74-85 loss Friday night at the hands of University of New Brunswick Saint John. Senior Wyatt Hathaway led the Mustangs with a 17-point effort, shooting 5-for-11 on three pointers.

The Mustangs made a good start to things in the first ten minutes of the four-quarter format, taking a 16-13 lead with 3:27 left on a put-back layup by Isaac Irwin. The Seawolves would finish the opening stanza strong though to take a 24-19 lead after one.

The second quarter was Central Maine's best of the game with the team putting up 27 points to go into halftime down by just two, 46-48. Hathaway hit back-to-back threes in the final two minutes to begin closing an eight-point gap before J.T. Pound drilled a triple in the final minute.

But UNB Saint John began to flex its muscles in the third quarter, knocking down shots from behind the arc and Ethan Szemerda and Jack Fury-Miller racing behind the defense for fast break layups. The hosts outscored CMCC 25-13 to take a 14-point lead into the final ten minutes.

Both teams looked to use more options off their bench in the early-season contest. Nine different players got their names on the score sheet for the visitors. The Seawolves would manage their lead down the stretch to hang on for the 85-74 victory.

Da'Vohn Jonas-Reid followed his fellow captain Hathaway in points with 12, while also dealing out a team-high five assists. E.J. Pemberton also finished with a double-digit effort in points with 12 off the bench. Pound led the Mustangs with nine rebounds.
