Men’s Basketball Gets Tested at UMaine-Farmington

Farmington, ME – The CMCC Men's Basketball team got an early-season test against NCAA DIII squad UMaine-Farmington, falling on the road at the hands of the Beavers, 98-81. All five starters reached double digit scoring for the Mustangs with point guard Will Duke leading the way with 18 points.

UMF turned what was a close three-point game with seven minutes gone into a 49-34 lead at the break. Simon Chadbourne led the hosts with 11 points in just 13 first-half minutes.

Farmington pulled away in the second half, building a 28-point lead when Kory Donlin's jumper made it 79-51 midway through. Central Maine did close to within 11 after Wyatt Hathaway knocked down a three-pointer with 4:06 left to play, but that was as close as the team would get.

Turnovers were costly for CMCC, as their 16 turned into 23 points for UMF. While the Mustangs had a higher 3PT% going 10-for-24 from beyond the arc, the Beavers actually made more three-pointers on a 15-for-38 shooting night.

Duke was 4-for-8 on threes and added four assists to his 18 points for Central Maine. J.T. Pound scored 16 and pulled down eight rebounds. Da'Vohn Jonas finished with 14 while Khaden Moore had 11. Hathaway recovered from a first half that saw him miss all three of his attempts from outside, to finish with 10 points.

Zach McGlaughlin led Farmington with 21 points off the bench, while Chadbourne (17), Brock Flagg (13), Dylan Griffin (12), and Jordan Anthony (12) also finished in double digits.

"We saw the difference between freshman and sophomores playing juniors and seniors," said head coach Dave Gonyea. "They're bigger, they're stronger, they're quicker, but at the end of the day games like this help us a lot regardless of the score and we'll keep moving forward."

CMCC returns home to face another NCAA DIII opponent in Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday, November 3rd. The Mustangs and Mariners tip-off at 3:00 pm.
