Mustangs Top of YSCC After 84-69 Win at Great Bay

Portsmouth, NH – CMCC Men's Basketball remains in first place in the Yankee Small College Conference standings after an 84-69 win on the road against Great Bay. The Mustangs had four players score in double figures and held the Herons to just 28 points in the first half to improve to 8-1 in conference play.

The Herons started faster on their home court, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and staying in front for most of the early stages. Captain Da'Vohn Jonas hit a three from the corner to give Central Maine a 22-21 lead with 12:05 left in the first half. That was the start of an 18-2 run from the Mustangs to break the game open and take a 37-23 lead.

Coach Dave Gonyea's squad never trailed in the second half and kept Great Bay at arm's length, managing a lead that climbed as high as 20 points. Khaden Moore once again led the team in scoring for the third straight game, putting up 18. Jonas (11), Wyatt Hathaway (11), and Rocco Chang (10) joined him in double digits.

Two-time 2nd-Team All-YSCC selection Theodore Wolfe paced the Herons with a game-high 21 points, followed by Mpore Semhuoza with 19. However, Great Bay was held to 35.6% shooting from the field including just a 6-for-35 effort from beyond the arc as CMCC guarded the paint.

The Mustangs, who are ranked 7th in the latest USCAA DII national poll, completed their regular season sweep of the Herons to move to 12-7 overall on the year. The team finishes its five-game road trip with a busy weekend, facing Vermont State University-Randolph on Friday, Word of Life Bible Institute on Saturday, and Paul Smith's College on Sunday.
