Calais, ME – CMCC Men's Basketball put together a great second half performance to rally past Washington County Community College on the road, 82-81 on Sunday. The Mustangs trailed by 14 points at halftime before closing the gap to set up a frantic final few minutes. Khaden Moore led the way with 24 points including 13 after the break.
Central Maine was coming off a conference win vs Word of Life on Saturday, but started slow against the Golden Eagles. WCCC built a 50-36 lead in the first half, taking advantage of their home court and some tired legs to take a double-digit advantage back to the locker room.
CMCC trailed by as many as 18 early in the second half before the defense began to force turnovers and empty possessions. The Mustangs went on a 17-0 run over a five-minute stretch to turn it into a 57-56 ball game. The visitors took the lead, 64-66 with 7:43 left on the clock setting up a close battle to the finish.
Moore scored the last five points for Central Maine, including the go-ahead layup to break a 78-78 tie with 47 seconds left on the clock. The freshman forward out of Naugatuck, CT made it back-to-back 20+ point games with Wyatt Hathaway (15) and J.T. Pound (14) also reaching double figures.
The Mustangs have the chance to finish off a three-game season sweep of the Golden Eagles when the teams face each other one more time this season in Auburn on Sunday, February 2nd. CMCC next begins a run of six Yankee Small College Conference games over nine days, starting with a visit to Great Bay on Wednesday, January 22nd. The Mustangs and Herons are currently the top two teams in the YSCC standings. Tip-off in Portsmouth, NH is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
