Pottersville, NY – Captain Wyatt Hathaway added another accolade to his time with CMCC men's basketball, scoring his 1,000th career point in the Mustangs 76-66 win against Word of Life Bible Institute on Saturday. The Leavitt Area High School graduate reached the milestone on a free throw in the final minute, becoming the 16th player in program history to do so.
Central Maine recovered from its season-low 14 first-half points in Friday's loss to VTSU-Randolph by scoring 38 points on either side of halftime against WOLBI. The Mustangs went up 34-13 with 6:21 to play in the opening stanza before the Huskies rallied to close within 14 at the break.
The visitors started the second half stronger as well, taking a 24-point advantage with Hathaway heating up from outside. The former Leavitt Hornet, who scored more than 1,500 points in high school and was the Maine Gatorade Player of the Year on the football field, scored 12 points after halftime to help keep the Huskies at bay.
Word of Life did close to within single digits in the final five minutes, but CMCC did enough to claim its 13th win of the campaign. The Mustangs controlled the boards, outrebound WOLBI 47 to 26. The team shot 48.3% from the field, but did turn the ball over 18 times.
Will Duke led the way with a team-high 16 points, one more than Hathaway's total of 15. J.T. Pound posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Da'Vohn Jonas and Rocco Chang each finished one point shy of double figures with nine. Hayden Jordan paced the hosts with a game-high 20 points in the loss.
It was a memorable trip to Word of Life for both CMCC basketball teams. Second-year Ella Lavigne also reached 1,000 points in her career for the women's team in their victory.
