Mustangs Trample Moose 101-57 In YSCC Opener

Augusta, MERocco Chang had 15 points off the bench and 13 different Mustangs scored, as Men's Basketball opened up Yankee Small College Conference play with a 101-57 rout of UMaine-Augusta Wednesday night at the Augusta Civic Center. Five players finished in double-digit scoring.

Central Maine was even keeled start to finish, scoring 51 points in the first half to take a 13-point lead into the intermission, and scoring 50 points in the second half to pull away for the big victory.

Da'Vohn Jonas gave CMCC an 8-6 lead 3:05 into the contest and the Mustangs never trailed from there, holding the Moose to just two points over a seven-minute stretch. Chang entered the contest after 4:32 and made an immediate impact off the bench, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the first half. The sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and had two steals to help Central Maine build its lead.

The Mustangs did take a while to get back up to speed in the second half with Wyatt Hathaway's layup the team's only bucket through the first four minutes. The senior captain from Turner, ME got into rhythm and went 4-for-4 from the floor for nine points before exiting midway through the half.

Head coach Dave Gonyea got more of his personnel into the contest as the game went along. James Pearson made his first appearance in a Mustangs jersey with the first-year from Bundaberg, Australia scoring seven points. Sophomore Hunter Brackett matched his career high with five points and 15 different players had at least five minutes on the court.

CMCC had its largest lead of 47 points with 1:20 remaining and had some impressive numbers by the time the final horn sounded. Central Maine shot 48.0% from the field, went 10-for-25 on three pointers, forced 23 turnovers, and outrebounded the Moose 47 to 26. Chang's 15 points led all scorers with Hathaway (12), Will Duke (12), Da'Vohn Jonas (10), and E.J. Pemberton (10) chipping in. J.T. Pound finished a team-high 13 rebounds while Duke dealt out six assists.

The Mustangs improve to 2-6 on the season and 1-0 in YSCC play. They next host Washington County Community College on Saturday, November 9th at 8:00 pm in the first of three meetings with the Golden Eagles this season.
