Mustangs Start Slow, Fall Just Short vs Knights

Randolph, VT – CMCC Men's Basketball started its three-game weekend road trip with a 54-57 loss to Vermont State University-Randolph. The Mustangs scored only 14 points in the first half, but rallied in the closing minutes, before a desperation three at the buzzer missed the mark. It was only the team's second loss of Yankee Small College Conference play.

The Knights stymied the Mustangs in the opening 20 minutes, with Central Maine shooting just 20.7% from the field and making a season-low six baskets before halftime. VTSU-Randolph led 32-14 at the break and built its lead as high as 25 in the second half before CMCC began to close the gap.

The visitors put together a 21-2 run over an eight-minute long stretch of play, closing within two possessions to make it 40-46 with 5:22 remaining. Central Maine had multiple chances to make it a one possession game in the closing minutes, finally cutting the deficit to three points with seven seconds left. CMCC forced a turnover off the inbounds pass, but Keiontay Marsh's desperation three was off the mark at the buzzer.

J.T. Pound put up a double-double in the loss, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Khaden Moore led the Mustangs in scoring for the fourth straight game with 16, and Da'Vohn Jonas posted 10 points on a 5-for-10 shooting effort.

Jaylon Calvin was impressive for Vermont, dealing out four assists and finishing with 12 points, while Will Jenkins had a game-high 17 to improve the Knights to 9-3 in YSCC play. They currently sit third in the conference standings.

CMCC next shifts its weekend road trip to New York, taking on Word of Life Bible Institute on Saturday before facing Paul Smith's College on Sunday. Tip-off against the Huskies is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
