Auburn, ME – CMCC Men's Basketball ended a busy weekend with a perfect 3-0 record thanks to a hard-fought 78-67 victory over Vermont State University-Randolph on Sunday night at Kirk Hall Gymnasium. J.T. Pound led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds in what was a physical game between the two sides.
The Mustangs trailed for the majority of the first half after swapping the lead three times in the opening minutes, but the Knights could only stretch their advantage as far as seven points. Central Maine took the lead back before halftime thanks to an 8-0 run in the final three minutes behind a series of free throws and a three-pointer from captain Wyatt Hathaway, which made it 39-32 at the interval.
The second half was all about managing their lead, with Vermont never getting back within one possession of tying things up. Pound added another eight points to his total down the stretch and was joined by the trio of Isaac Irwin, Khaden Moore, and Will Duke, who each scored seven points after the halftime break. CMCC hit its free throws down the stretch to collect the win.
Moore (13), Irwin (11), and E.J. Pemberton (11) joined Pound in double-digit scoring. Central Maine did commit more turnovers (14 to 5) but made up for it with a 7-for-15 shooting performance from beyond the arc. The hosts also had the edge on the glass winning the rebound battle 33 to 27.
The three wins on the weekend is men's basketball's first three-game winning streak of the season. The Mustangs improve to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play. It was also the second straight game in Auburn for VTSU-Randolph with the Knights having played the UMaine-Augusta Moose on CMCC's home floor on Saturday night.
Central Maine next takes on the archrival SMCC Seawolves for the first time this year, making the trip down to South Portland on Thursday, December 8th for an 8:00 pm showdown.
