Men's Ice Hockey wins season opener

Men's Ice Hockey wins season opener

Auburn ME - After a long off season with plenty recruiting and 15 freshmen added to the roster, the Mustangs faced Southern New Hampshire University a D2 opponent as their first test of the season

The first period it took the Mustangs awhile to settle in, but after giving up the first goal the Mustangs were resilient and scored 3 unanswered to have a 2-goal lead going into the break. The 2nd period delivered trouble for the Mustangs, and after taking numerous penalties including a 5-minute shorthanded situation, SNHU would climb back to even the game at 3-3. A late Mustangs power play would give them a 5-3 lead with 1 period left to play.

Int he 3rd period, the Mustangs conditioning took over and with lots of zone time and pressure the final score ended in a 9-4 win for the home team.

After the game, Head Men's Ice Hockey Coach, Jordy Knoren, stated, "It was great to pick up the first win of the season, but we have lots of work to do and cannot continue to put ourselves shorthanded. When we skate 5-on-5 we are going to be tough to beat. I do not feel like we played a great game, but I saw flashes of some good hockey and we will have to continue to develop and get better every day."
