1st Quarter Blitz Sees Women’s Basketball Past ACPHS

Albany, NY – The CMCC Women's Basketball team put up 41 points in the first quarter and Hunter Hartsgrove had a game-high 31 points off the bench, as the Mustangs galloped past the Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences 101-34 on Saturday afternoon in New York. It was just the second Yankee Small College Conference game of the campaign for the unbeaten Central Maine squad.

"Our press to start the game was effective, especially since we were not fouling," said head coach Andrew Morong. "Putting up 40 points in a quarter is pretty special and it allowed us to work on other things and try different lineups. We are showing improvements on both sides of the ball, but still have a lot of work to do."

Hartsgrove was a big part of her team's lightning-fast start to the contest. The first-year guard was playing her first game since returning from injury and third game overall of the season. She entered the game less than three minutes in and proceeded to drop 15 points in the first quarter over the next seven minutes, including going five-for-five from beyond the arc.

The Panthers did their best to lock down the Patten, ME native in the second quarter, but that left the door open for other players to get in on the act with seven different Mustangs scoring points. When the team's headed to the locker room for halftime, Central Maine had a 63-18 lead.

Hartsgrove got back into the groove in the second half, scoring eight points in both the third and fourth quarters to finish with 31 on an 11-for-23 shooting night from the floor.

"Hunter's shooting was spectacular," Morong said. "Not just because she made nine threes, but because every shot she took was with supreme confidence."

Ella Lavigne was impressive as well with 22 points in 20 minutes in an efficient 10-for-12 shooting performance to go along with seven steals. Ava Smith had a double-double ending with 13 points and 10 rebounds in her first game back from injury for a banged-up Mustangs team that was still missing several key players. Ten different players had at least one field goal.

It was CMCC's first game in nearly two full weeks. They do not return to Auburn until after the Thanksgiving break when the Mustangs take on Berkeley College-NY on Friday, December 6th.
