Lavigne Sets New Scoring Record in Win at SMCC

South Portland, ME – Second-year guard Ella Lavigne rewrote the CMCC Women's Basketball record books Thursday night, setting a new single-game scoring record for the program with a 48-point performance against rivals SMCC in the Mustangs 105-70 victory. Lavigne surpasses New England Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and legendary Central Maine alum Lynn Girouard from the class of '03. The former Miss Maine Basketball from Lewiston High School held the previous high of 45 points.

Making it even more impressive, the Fort Collins, CO native scored her 48 points in just 24 minutes of playing time on an efficient 20-for-29 shooting performance from the floor. Lavigne also grabbed seven rebounds and added six steals. Three other Mustangs joined her in double figures with Ava Smith (19), Hunter Hartsgrove (16), and Jenny Chaput (10) all reaching the ten-point mark.

"Getting a win in South Portland is always nice," said head coach Andrew Morong. "We were down a few key players, and we started four freshmen. We weren't sure what to expect, but we could not have started the game any better. I wished we had closed out the game with more urgency, but we're still young and have a lot of growth still in front of us."

CMCC set the tone for the game early with a suffocating press defense. The #1 ranked USCAA DII team in the country went on a 24-0 run early in the first quarter to take a 31-5 lead after only six minutes, and hassling the Seawolves into 11 turnovers.

Coach Morong alternated his defensive looks while rotating in 11 different players as part of different personnel combinations in the first half. Central Maine outscored Southern Maine 23-10 in the second quarter to take a 59-26 lead into the locker room, with 24 of those points coming from Lavigne.

SMCC's offense fared a little better in the second half, scoring 21 and 23 points in the third and fourth quarters respectively. However, there was no stopping the CMCC offense. Lavigne added 16 more after the interval and scored eight in just four minutes during the fourth quarter to claim the program's single-game scoring record for herself.

The Mustangs continued to tinker with different combos to help with an injured lineup. Cassie Ririnui got ten minutes off the bench as she works back to full fitness, and newcomer Autumn Peterson made her debut, playing seven minutes in the fourth quarter. The Cherryfield, ME native is a recent addition to the basketball roster having already completed her fall campaign on the CMCC volleyball team.

Even more impressive for Central Maine was getting the win done largely without their two captains. Second-year Zoe Bedford continues her lengthy recovery from injury while Rosa Prieto was limited to just four minutes in the first half.

By the end of the game, the Mustangs had crossed the century mark for the third time this season, thanks in large part to 54 points in the paint and a 42 to 26 edge in rebounds. The visitors also shot 58.9% from the field. CMCC led by as many as 51 in the fourth quarter before a late surge from SMCC. The Seawolves were paced by Ashley Mullen who finished the night with 28 points.

Central Maine improves to 12-0 on the season with a 5-0 mark in YSCC play. Next up, the Mustangs close out the first semester by hosting USCAA Division I opponent Bryant & Stratton-Albany on Tuesday, December 17th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
