Mustangs Rally Past UMaine-Fort Kent 92-77

Auburn, ME Ella Lavigne scored 25 points and Zoe Bedford and Rosa Prieto knocked down six three-pointers apiece, as the CMCC women's basketball team rallied in the second half to knock off USCAA DI UMaine-Fort Kent 92-77. The Mustangs trailed 45-38 at halftime before taking the lead for good just 2:33 into the third quarter.

UMFK started the game strong, scoring the first seven points and taking a 25-16 lead after the first quarter. The Bengals set the tone by going 11-for-18 from the field in the first ten minutes and looked like they may leave the hosts in the dust. Bedford kept CMCC within single digits thanks to her three three-pointers, giving the team time to find their rhythm.

Fort Kent increased their lead to a 13-point advantage forcing head coach Andrew Morong to take a timeout. His team responded with another barrage of three-pointers. Bedford drilled another three treys of her own and Prieto added two, as the team finished the quarter going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. The last one by the second-year captain from Melbourne, Australia cut the deficit to five only for UMFK's Nysia Ortiz to hit a jumper at the buzzer.

Central Maine looked to its bigs to turn the game around in the second half. Lavigne, the 5'11" guard and Jenny Chaput, the 6'0" forward combined for ten straight points in the third quarter to put the Mustangs on top and force the Bengals to use a timeout. Prieto connected on three more shots from outside and the hosts had suddenly rallied back to take a 66-63 lead going into the fourth quarter.

UMaine-Fort Kent, on its second road game in two days, appeared to tire in the final ten minutes. The Bengals failed to make a field goal in the final 4:30 of the game and were held to a game-low 14 points in the final quarter. CMCC put the game away with nine more points from Lavigne and seven from Farah Attallah.

Bedford and Prieto ended the game with 18 points each behind Lavigne's 25-point and 10-rebound night. Chaput finished with 15 while Attallah and Riley Hebler each had seven. UMFK's Cece Bell led all scorers with a game-high 31 points in the loss. CMCC shot a season-best 56.0% from beyond the arc going 14-for-25.
