Auburn, ME – CMCC Women's Basketball finished off a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 67-34 victory over YSCC opponent Vermont State University-Randolph. It was the second-fewest points the Mustangs have allowed in a game this season, as they improve to 11-0 overall.
Hunter Hartsgrove and Ella Lavigne led the scoring effort with 17 and 13 points respectively. Cassie Ririnui also reached double figures with a 10-point night off the bench in just nine minutes of action as she continues her return from injury. Ava Smith secured a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points of her own.
The Knights kept things close in the first quarter, taking an early 6-4 lead and trailing only 19-14 after the first ten minutes. The Mustangs opened things up in the second quarter, adding another 19 points to their side of the scoreboard behind three three-pointers by Hartsgrove, while limiting Vermont to only eight points. That gave the hosts a 38-22 lead at halftime.
If there was any concern about fatigue on the legs of Central Maine, the Mustangs put that to rest with a 21-point effort to begin the second half. Stella Laubenstein was two-for-two from outside and Lavigne made her presence known in the paint, scoring five points and pulling down three rebounds in the third quarter. Ririnui dropped six points in just three minutes during a fourth quarter that saw 12 different Mustangs rotate into the contest. Impressively, the team held VTSU-Randolph to only four points to claim a 33-point win.
Both teams had their struggles shooting from the floor, finishing under 35% for the game, but CMCC had a lot more opportunities thanks to their 53 to 31 edge in rebounding. Central Maine also committed 15 fewer turnovers than their visitors.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to their first meeting of the year with the archrival SMCC Seawolves on the road in South Portland. That game has been moved to Thursday, December 12th due to an expected winter storm. Tip-off is still scheduled for 6:00 pm at the Hutchinson Union Building.
