Hartsgrove’s Hot Streak Pushes Women’s Basketball by Berkeley

Auburn, ME – The CMCC Women's Basketball squad continued their torrid pace with a 91-53 win over Berkeley College Friday night at Kirk Hall Gymnasium. First-year forward Hunter Hartsgrove led the team with a new career-best mark of 33 points, giving the Katahdin Middle/High School product a total of 85 in her last three games since returning from injury. 
 
Ava Smith (14), Ella Lavigne (13), Riley Hebler (12), and Jenny Chaput (10) all reached double figures. The Mustangs improved to 10-0 to start the year and picked up their third win against a USCAA DI opponent. 
 
The Knights led 6-2 in the opening minutes before Central Maine took the lead for good on a Hebler layup with 5:28 to play in the first quarter. CMCC took a 22-12 lead after the first ten minutes and poured it on in the second. Hartsgrove shot 9-for-14 in the second quarter alone for a total of 23 points and the Mustangs galloped into halftime with a 54-30 advantage. 
 
The freshman guard, who was playing in just her fifth game of the year, added seven more in the third quarter before being pulled early in the fourth. Smith went for 12 in the second half and head coach Andrew Morong rotated his bench into the game over the final 20 minutes with the game in hand. 
 
Khya Hough led the visitors with a team-high 12 points ahead of 11 from Maria Negron. CMCC shot 45.6% from the floor while holding Berkeley to just 28.3%. The Mustangs won the rebound battle 53 to 35 and went 9-of-28 from beyond the arc. The team led by as many as 40 late on.
