Mustangs Stymie Knights for 63-31 Victory

Auburn, ME – CMCC Women's Basketball returned to their winning ways in conference play with a 63-31 win over Vermont State University-Randolph on Friday. The Mustangs held the Knights to under ten points in three of the four quarters and got double-digit scoring performances from Ella Lavigne and Rosa Prieto to claim their 22nd win of the campaign. The game was a rescheduled contest played at Kirk Hall after the original January 24th date had to be postponed due to a referee shortage in Vermont.

Both teams started out slow with the hosts holding only a 7-3 lead past the midway point of the first quarter. Lavigne shot 3-of-5 from the floor to put the Mustangs up 11-5 heading into the second, while Yvonne Roberge had all five points for the visitors.

Central Maine looked more like themselves in the second ten-minute stretch, adding 20 points from six different scorers. The defense meanwhile held VTSU-Randolph to just a 4-for-29 shooting performance from the field while forcing ten turnovers. At the halftime break, CMCC took a 31-10 lead into the locker room.

Prieto took over in the third quarter, knocking down 5-for-6 shots for 11 points. The Knights mustered seven points but entered the final ten minutes down 52-17. All 13 players dressed for the Mustangs saw the floor in the fourth quarter, as the hosts cruised to their 10th win of YSCC play.

CMCC shot 43.8% from the field and outrebounded the VTSU-Randolph 48-27. The hosts led wire-to-wire and got points from eight different players. Riley Hebler had eight with two three-pointers. Ava Smith and Marney Rees both finished with six and pulled down eight and six rebounds respectively.

Central Maine has two more conference games remaining on its schedule, hosting SMCC and ACPHS to round out the regular season.
