Pottersville, NY – Ella Lavigne became the newest player to reach 1,000 points scored for the CMCC women's basketball team on Saturday, scoring 23 in the Mustangs 105-28 victory at Word of Life Bible Institute. The Fort Collins, CO native is the eighth player in program history to surpass the milestone, and the first to do it in only her second college season since Gabby Foy in 2015.
Central Maine scored the first 11 points of the game, but the Huskies dug in during the first quarter, getting through the opening ten minutes trailing only 20-10. However, the Mustangs shook off the doldrums from their long bus ride and poured it on in the second quarter. Lavigne got to the 1,000 points mark on an assist from Riley Hebler with 4:09 remaining in the first half, as part of a 28-0 run. The visitors added 37 total points to their side of the scoreboard to take a 57-14 lead back to the locker room.
The defense held WOLBI to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters. CMCC also crossed the 100-point threshold for the seventh time this season. Ava Smith joined Lavigne with a game-high 23 points, while Farah Attallah (18) and Jenny Chaput (13) also scored in double figures. Captain Rosa Prieto marked her return to line-up from injury by dealing out a season-high 10 assists.
Chantel Ouellette marked her return to the Mustangs herd as well. The Edward Little graduate, who originally played a season and a half for CMCC after transferring in from Thomas College, had been working with the team as an assistant coach in the first semester. However, with injuries mounting for the Mustangs, head coach Andrew Morong talked with the guard about suiting up for the stretch run. Ouellette played seven minutes on Saturday, scoring on a layup in the third quarter.
Central Maine scored 72 points in the paint and won the rebound battle 41 to 17. The Mustangs also harangued the Huskies into 31 turnovers while getting 11 players on the scoresheet. CMCC now sits at 19-0 and 8-0 in YSCC play.
It was a memorable trip to Word of Life for both CMCC basketball teams. Men's team captain Wyatt Hathaway also reached the 1,000-point milestone for his career in their win against the Huskies.
