Bench Play Leads Mustangs to Victory 90-65

Auburn, ME – Matt Attard came off the bench in the beginning of the third period and drained three three's, took two charges, all in a five minute span to propel the Mustangs to a 90-65 win over Great Bay Community College.  With CM up by one, 40-39 at the half, it appeared the Herons were poised for an upset.  Coach Gonyea played fourteen players in the first half, keeping fresh bodies on the floor.  The CM starters were feeling the effects of playing two nights ago in an emotional win over NHTI and had trouble defending.  The bench was called upon and they delivered.

Great Bay was represented by smaller, quick guards who could get up and down.   The CM big's had trouble matching up and Coach Gonyea went to a quicker, up-tempo line up.   Looking for a spark, Iija Ivkovic' s name was called and he hit the floor and immediately grabbed two rebounds, and hit a key three bringing the Mustang bench to life.  Tyheim Burgess and Khalid Ibn chipped in defensively with Burgess playing lockdown defense.  The home team dominated the second half both in scoring and controlled the glass.  The rebounding edge was 47-24.

Saikwon Williams again proved he is one of the toughest offensive players in the conference.  He hit for 20 points, ripped down 10 rebounds, and registered 4 steals.  He brought the house down with three tremendous dunks and dominated in the paint.

Along with Williams's numbers, Mark McDonald added 13 points, Corey David 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and Nicolas Dierynck chipped in with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Coach Gonyea adds," We played a sloppy, non-inspired first half and we let the kids know that at halftime.  Our starters were lax, non-focused and two steps behind. In the second half, we looked for a spark and it came in the form of Matty Attard.  He hit three big shots in a row to lead us.  The Herons also had no answer for Saikwon and simply couldn't match up.  The second half was a much more like a CM half."

It is a quick turnaround for the Mustangs.  Bryant Stratton out of Albany, New York is in town tomorrow for a 1pm tip off.
