Add Another Aussie to the Mustang Mix

Auburn, ME – The Central Maine Athletic department and head men's basketball coach Dave Gonyea is pleased to announce Alex McFetridge, a graduate of the Hunter Valley Grammer School in Brisbane, Australia has signed on with the Mustangs for the fall of 2020.  McFetridge is a 6'3" wing player, was an all-conference player, varsity captain, two-time MVP averaging 15 ppg, and averaged 6 assists per game in high school.  He represented his country in the ACIES which placed third in nationals in 2017.  He received state honors for basketball his senior year and was named Australian Olympic change maker his senior year.

Coach Gonyea offers, "Alex is a bright, hardworking player with a strong basketball IQ.  He shoots it pretty good and has the right personality and mind set to be a Mustang.  I am looking forward to working with him on the court."

Gonyea adds, "I asked Alex for a quote that would describe his basketball career."  He responded, "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take."  "I thought that was interesting, and told me something about his personality."

Alex is studying Criminal Justice at CM.

He answered the questions below:

Why did you choose CM?

For me choosing CM was a very easy decision. The program was very eye opening and made me excited to hear more. Once I talked to Coach Gonyea and some of the players/students choosing CM just felt like the best decision to me.

What did you like most about the campus?
Even though I have not officially visited the campus, I really love how everything is close together and easily accessible, which is great to go to classes, basketball training and the weight room plus the gym is open all the time

How do you think playing college basketball will differ from your previous experience?

College basketball will be more fasted paced on the offence and defensive side of the ball. This is something I am really excited about. I love high intensity offence and strong defense being played.

What are you most looking forward to about attending and playing basketball at CM?

What I am most looking forward to with playing and attending CM is the Family environment that the school and team has. Talking to the coach and players made the experience sound even better than the game film showed on game days.

What do you think you can bring to the team next year?
What I know I can bring to the team is a positive attitude and desire to grow not only as an individual but to help my teammates be the best they can be and as one we can all go to the next level.

Describe your basketball experience.

My basketball experience started when I was young, I first started playing when I was 11 and I have been in love ever since and I have never looked back. I played varsity basketball all throughout school named captain for 3 years and was named a starter in the 3 years.

What is your biggest strength in basketball?
I believe reading the game is my biggest strength. Being able to read where the defense is during a play and finding open cutting lanes and players on the court. my ability to hit outside shot can be helpful also during the season with CM.
