Blakney joining Mustangs

Wareham, MA – Mataya Blakney, a post player from Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School in Fall River, MA, has committed to the women's basketball program.  Blakney helped lead Diman to the state tournament again this year, while leading her team in points, rebounds, and blocks.  Named Diman's girls basketball Most Valuable Player, Blakney was also named a Mayflower Conference and MetroWest Daily News All-Star.

While averaging 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game this past season, Blakney was a finalist for the Dave Cowens Leadership award, being one of just 15 nominees for this prestigious award.  Off the court, she is a 4-year member of the student council.

Head Women's Basketball Coach, Andrew Morong, on Blakney's commitment, "I think this is a tremendous fit for Mataya, our college, and our women's basketball program.  On the court Mataya has improved immensely since just beginning to play basketball as a freshman in high school.  She will add depth to our front court, and with her size and strength should be able to make an immediate impact.  Most importantly, I think Mataya will develop into a great leader on and off the court during her time here.  She has an infectious personality, and a high level of enthusiasm."

Blakney on her commitment, "I know that college basketball is going to be very different than high school.  Everyone at CM pours their heart and soul into the team, and I am really looking forward to that.  I want to work hard and make something of myself, and I am excited that I will be around others who are looking to do the same.  The campus is beautiful, and the fact that they have dorms and you get to room with someone else from the team is great.  I love that setup.  I am really looking forward to being a part of a family, not just a team.  On and off the court, I want to push myself past my limits, and see what I'm made of."
